Annecy – Alpenes Venezia
Scroll down for English.

Annecy – The pearl of the Alps
Annecy is called both the Pearl of the Alps and Venice of the Alps. Both are wildly appropriate. The town is located on the shores of Annecy lake, with a distinctive mountain green color.
The branches of the river Thiou creates canals and islands that calls for narrow streets and passageways that barely leave room for shops.

It’s only 25 km to Switzerland and you get a lot of the same cheezy menues as you would find in the other Alpine regions.

In the beginning of the 19th century, the area became popular among hikers and mountain people as a great starting point for both lake and mountain activities. There’s plenty of activity on the water during the summer months.

The big castle towering over the town is now a museum open to visitors.

We stayed at the Hotel du Nord for a couple of nights. Only 2 stars, but clean and conveniently located less than 10 minutes walk from the city centre. And with a free parking for our rental car.
Most photographed spot
There’s a lot to see in the area. The picture people flock here to get, is this one. A shot of the palace in the middle of town, with water on each side.
Le Palais de l’Île has served as both a prison, a court house, an asylum for old people as well as an administration building. The oldest part of the building dates from the 12th century.

At the end of the 19th century, somebody wanted to tear the place down to build communal baths. Luckily that was stopped. On February 16th 1900 the palace was declared an historic monument and the restauration started immediately. A second round of restauration was done in the beginning of the 1980s. A visit in the museum should take about an hour.

We flew from Oslo to Geneva and got our rental car there. The first stop was one night at Georges Blanc i Vonnas where we indulged in luxury and gourmet food.
